Following an Optibet Virsliga 17th round victory against SK Super Nova (1:0) Valmiera FC head coach Jurgis Kalns shared his comments and thoughts with the media.
Valmiera FC head coach Jurgis Kalns: ‘’We needed this 1:0 victory because these still are three points. The game itself and the result were needed for the next two games. I don’t want to call this our plan but we knew that it could turn out this way. Right now after a long pause the players aren’t level in physical and mental condition. Some players have returned from their national teams where in three weeks they only took part in three practice sessions. Last time after the international break we played against BFC Daugavpils and the score was 0:0, I promised not to give national team players a hand in these games and that they wouldn’t play. Everyone knows that if they do have not a lot of playing time they aren’t ready but we took the risk knowing that we have to play our next games which are truly important – against RFS and Riga FC. We relied on the fact that this would be the outcome, we knew that the game would be played this way and that is why we gave all five players of the Latvian national team to start the game. Alvis Jaunzems was surprised in a positive way, Emils Birka played well, and we planned to substitute him during the match. Right now the goal is to get them functionally ready, for the players’ 13th victory in a row and a 1:0 win against a smaller team was necessary.’’
