Magnificent win over RFS

Valmiera FC players demonstrated an excellent determination in what appeared the one of the most important games of the season so far. Playing on away in Riga, it was the tournament’s leaders RFS who had to capitulate with the score 1:2. It was only the second loss this season for RFS, both of which were acquired by playing against Valmiera.

Tamaz Pertia faced a lack of multiple key players before this round, for a variety of reasons Luka Gadrani, Pape Yare Fall and Raimonds Krollis were missing. The coach placed 19-year-olds in the starting lineup – full back Viktor Aleksandrov and left full back Rudolfs Zengis, instead of these players. The captain’s arm band in this game was entrusted to Daniels Balodis.

Both teams started the game with dangerous attacks, enthusiastic football was played the whole first half. Unfortunately, a failed episode in the 33 th minute of the game occurred to Valmiera’s defenseman Joyskim Dawa, who sent the ball into his own net in an innocent situation. Ibrahima Sow returned his team very quickly in the game, after being the nimblest with his head in front of the goal after a corner was taken by Ivan Zhelizko followed by a header by Aleksandrov.

The second half-time turned out to be particularly hard, referee had to show six yellow cards in total. Still, none of the teams were prepared to give up the reins of the game. The crucial moment of the game came in the 81 st minute, when, after another dead ball situation taken by Zhelizko’s, this time free kick, the RFS goalkeeper made an awful mistake just in front of his goal, Djibril Gueye was there to knock the ball in empty net.

Soon after Victor Diagne earned his second yellow, and Valmiera had to make a great effort to keep that score. The team owes to Rihards Matrevics who made an unbelievable save in dying seconds of the game, thus giving Valmiera a very important victory in the fight for the Champions title.

After this round, we’re only five points behind the RFS, three points behind Riga FC with a game in reserve. In the next round on July 2 at 19:30 we will play with BFC Daugavpils on Daugava stadium in Riga.
