True football fans are never too bothered by a match without goals, though there are always those who use such occasions to criticize the sport — often comparing it to basketball, where a scoreless game is practically impossible.
But was Valmiera FC’s latest LVBET League match in Riga against SK Super Nova-2 a poor football spectacle simply because the scoreboard remained untouched? Certainly not. Both on and off the pitch, everyone involved delivered an intense and engaging contest for the full 90 minutes.
As the season gains momentum and approaches the halfway point of the first round, one thing has become clear — there is still no obvious favorite in the league. At least four or even five teams are capable of fighting at the top and keeping the title race tense all the way until the end of the second round.
The reserve sides of Virslīga clubs, including Super Nova-2, have shown they are more than capable of disrupting the ambitions of teams chasing promotion to the top division.
This latest match involving Valmiera was a perfect example. Credit must be given to the coaches of the Super Nova academy for preparing their young players for senior football — their fighting spirit, aggression, and physical condition were all impressive. At the same time, the same qualities can easily be used to describe Gatis Kalniņš’s Valmiera side as well.
On a beautiful Tuesday evening, both teams created enough chances to win the game, but lacked quality and precision in the final moments of their attacks. The opportunities were there — and some were excellent — but neither side could find the breakthrough.
The week is far from over, however. This Saturday, Valmiera FC begins its Latvian Cup campaign, hosting Skanstes SK at the Valmiera Olympic Centre stadium at 15:00.
