The LVBET League Round 19 clash between Valmiera FC and FK Metta was eagerly anticipated throughout the Latvian football community. The stakes were high — a victory for either side would have provided a major advantage over the other contenders in the battle for direct promotion to the Virslīga. In an entertaining encounter, however, the two sides shared the points in a 2–2 draw.
The match at Jānis Daliņš Stadium attracted the largest crowd of the First League season so far, with more than 500 spectators in attendance. The league’s two leading teams delivered a football spectacle that had supporters rising from their seats in excitement on more than one occasion.
During the opening stages, both teams battled for the initiative while sticking to their chosen tactics, with both sides applying a high press deep in the opposition half. The game was filled with aggressive and uncompromising duels, frequently interrupted by the referee’s whistle. One such challenge resulted in a yellow card for Valmiera’s defensive leader Lenny Manisa.
The opening goal did not take long to arrive. In the 22nd minute, Doudou cleverly won possession in midfield and immediately launched an attack against two Metta defenders. Moments later, he found the advancing Gleilson with a pass, and the Brazilian made no mistake with his finish, beating the final obstacle — Metta goalkeeper Krists Pļaviņš — to put Valmiera ahead, 1–0.
The evenly matched battle continued, but towards the end of the first half fortune began to favour Metta. In the 36th minute, Manisa caught the leg of visiting striker Sadih Saleh inside the penalty area, and Rūdolfs Kļavinskis confidently converted the resulting penalty to level the score.
Metta’s good fortune did not end there. In the 44th minute, a defensive mistake presented Kļavinskis with another opportunity in front of goal, and he punished the hosts once again to turn the match around and give his side a 2–1 lead.
Early in the second half, Gleilson produced an excellent individual move in attack, bursting into the visitors’ penalty area with the ball and squeezing between two defenders before reaching a third — former Valmiera player Kevins Cēsnieks. He brought down the rapid Brazilian, and the referee pointed to the spot once again.
Team captain Fraj Kairmani immediately took responsibility. With complete confidence, he stepped up and fired the ball into the bottom corner, clipping the post on its way into the net — 2–2.
The complexion of the match changed again in the 68th minute when Vladimirs Stepanovs received his second yellow card. With Valmiera reduced to ten men, Metta’s chances of finding a winner suddenly increased considerably.
And yet, remarkably, it was Gatis Kalniņš’s side who came closest to taking the lead. On a counterattack, Kairmani brought the entire stadium to its feet before unselfishly playing the ball across to an unmarked Doudou in front of goal. Somehow, Pļaviņš managed to keep out his effort. Fortune, it seemed, was still lingering on Metta’s side — but not for much longer.
As the final whistle approached, Metta increased the pressure on Haralds Kalniņš’s goal. Valmiera’s defence was forced to dig deep, but responded with determination and confidence. Whenever gaps appeared, Haralds was there to rescue his team.
In one remarkable moment, the Valmiera goalkeeper produced something close to a superhuman save, denying Abdulraheem when the Metta player found himself one-on-one with him.
By then, fortune appeared to have switched sides. The final extraordinary moment of the match provided further proof. Another of Metta’s foreign players, Jalow, unleashed a long-range strike that first thundered against the crossbar before striking the heel of Haralds, who had leapt in an attempt to make the save. Somehow, the ball bounced away from goal. On another day, it might easily have rebounded off the goalkeeper and into the net — but not this time.
Perhaps, in the end, a draw was the fairest possible outcome of a match in which fortune smiled on both teams at different moments.
The result did provide one important piece of clarity. Should Valmiera and Metta finish the championship level on points at the top of the table, Valmiera will take first place thanks to their head-to-head results — a 2–1 victory and this 2–2 draw.
For now, however, both teams would be wise to forget about such scenarios. Seven rounds remain, their rivals are not standing still, and there will certainly be no shortage of difficult matches ahead.
Valmiera’s next challenge comes this weekend at the famous “Hanzas pitch”, where they will face fifth-placed JDFS Alberts on Saturday at 16:00.
