Cup dream comes to an end

20 September 2021

For the second consecutive year, we met with the FK Liepaja team in the semi-finals of the Latvian Cup, and for the second time in a row, we suffered a loss with equal results of 0:2. This means that the Cup final, which will take place on 24 October in Valmiera, will be without the participation of our club.

We arrived in Liepaja with almost no losses in the squad – except Alvis Jaunzems, who had been injured in the previous game against RFS and was unable to help in this game. It was us who started the match more actively, during the first half-time Ibrahima Sow had more than one very good chance of scoring, and the goalkeeper Krisjanis Zviedris was also showing top-class saving his team – in one of the episodes stopping a well-executed Ivan Zhelizko’s shot from distance.

The second half-time started with more activity from the home team and that said, very soon they were rewarded with the goal – the ball crossed from the corner was adjusted into the net by defenders Marko Simič feet, thereby opening the result – 0: 1. Ten minutes later, Tamaz Pertia’s boys fell into the counter-attack, failing to tackle right several times after the executed corner kick – great individual skills were shown by Martins Kigurs, who doubled his team’s lead with precise shot after the dribble – 0:2.

In the remainder of the game, FK Liepaja successfully protected their goal, preventing every attack made by their opponents. The best chance of getting a hopeful one-goal difference came a few minutes before the final whistle when Djibril Gueye struck past the far corner of the goal just by inches.

After this loss, six more games remained in the Latvian championship this season – all very important in the fight for gold.

The first is scheduled for this Sunday (26.09, 15:00) in Daugavpils, we will meet BFC Daugavpils in Celtnieks stadium.
