For the second year in a row, and also the second in the history of the whole club, we are ready to bring Valmiera’s name onto the European football stage once again. The first qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League with the Lithuanian vice-champions Marijampoles Sūduva is ahead of us.
The winner of this pair will be decided in a two-game total – the first fight on July 8 (at 19.00) will take place in Marijampole followed by a second leg game on July 15 (at 19.00) at Daugava Stadium in Riga. The winner will secure place in Round 2 of qualification, but for the loser, the tournament will be over.
Marijampole’s club ranks second in the national championship this season after 19 rounds, two points behind last year’s champions Vilnius Zalgiris. Sūduva as A Lyga champions was crowned three times – in 2017, 2018 and 2019. At the moment, the club’s head coach is Spanish specialist Victor Basadre. The club plays its home games at Hikvision arena in Marijampole, with a capacity of 6,250 seats. The team’s leaders this season are Bosnian defender Semir Kerla, French midfielder Romain Habran, and Argentine midfielder Nicolas Gorobsov.
Last year, during our short debut at the Euro cups, we’ve lost in the only game away to Poznan Lech (0:3).
