Following the UEFA Champions League qualifying first-leg loss against Olimpija Ljubljana (1:2) Valmiera FC head coach Jurgis Kalns shared his comments and thoughts with the media.
Valmiera FC head coach Jurģis Kalns: “In principle, we failed the first half tactically, if the right side followed the instructions, then the left side tried to do the same, but according to the plan, each side worked differently. The opponent also played differently on each side. The counterplay did not work out completely, it was not possible to come out of pressing with a cool head, the setup was to come out of it to take the ball under control. It didn’t work out and the opponent felt that they could press us, that the guys have a little awe, maybe too much respect for the opponent. At times, the opponent pressed adventurously, leaving very large areas open, which we were unable to exploit. Also, the attacking group was not ready to catch the ball at times, especially for Alioune Ndoye, I believe that the game didn’t work out for him. It was difficult to go on the attack, the few times in the first half when we went on the attack, we didn’t create anything, although the chances were good. After Kapic came on the pitch, the game changed completely, an experienced central midfielder appeared, who speaks and helps on the pitch. In Latvia, I can still reach the players with my voice, but here it was very difficult. He is such a player who leads, helps, and can keep the ball, that is very useful for our team.”
