Jurgis Kalns: ”It is a pleasure to be able to break that curse”

1 June 2024

Following Tonybet Virsliga’s 17th-round win against BFC Daugavpils (6:1) Valmiera FC head coach Jurgis Kalns shared his comments and thoughts with the media.

Valmiera FC head coach Jurgis Kalns: “It is a pleasure to win here in Daugavpils because we have not won here for three years. Under my leadership, the team here had not won either in this stadium or in Celtnieks. It is a pleasure to be able to break that curse and to do it in this way when a convincing victory is earned. Nine shots in the first half, five of them goals – at some point that bag had to open. Daugavpils, I’m sorry, today it worked. It’s not every game that we hit moments like today, but today they flew in. I think the game was over after the first half, the most important thing was not to get injured, and not get booked as usual. Maybe we wanted a historically biggest victory for Valmiera, which would have been 8:1, two more goals were needed. You have to go step by step. I am satisfied with the way the guys were in the mood for the game, and with the dedication they played. I didn’t like the fact that the first scored goal put us to sleep, it seemed that it would be like that, everything would go well, and everyone would hit and try to score. We didn’t play battles anymore, we only played clean balls and Daugavpils successfully equalized. Then we rearranged and you saw everything yourself. I think the victory is deserved. Now there is a national team break, some have several holidays, and some are on the national team for the first time. I’m proud of the guys going to the national team, they’ve done a good job. If we talk about the 2022 season – we had five players in the national team, last year was a quieter year for us. To expect that this year we will have five Latvian national team players – that was not expected by many. That’s how it is, and today it was also proven on the pitch.”
