Only a point taken from Liepāja

28 July 2024

In the 24th round of the Tonybet Virslīga, Valmiera FC and FK Liepāja met in a duel that was accompanied by heavy rains at the Daugava Stadium in Liepāja. There was no shortage of moments for both teams, but no goals were scored in the game and the team led by Gatis Kalniņš had to settle for the second goalless draw in a row.

After a while, the Valmiera team’s starting line-up was finally filled by two central defenders, for whom this position on the field suits them, namely the newly acquired Normunds Uldriķis and Roberts Veips. Both of them coped with their responsibilities in the game, the result of the game also shows that.

It also clearly shows that Valmiera’s attacking arsenal has been stuck somewhere for the second game. This time too, there was no lack of opportunities at Liepāja’s goal, but accuracy was again lacking at the end of the attacks, and once again the opponent’s goalkeeper stood out with a bright game.

After the game, the coaching staff had justified complaints against the players’ choice of boots, because at times during the game, on the flooded pitch, our players looked, sorry, like ducks on ice – in at least two cases, they slipped in the last phase of promising attacks.

The games against the Liepaja led by our team’s former coach Tamaz Pertia are already classics – usually there are only two options – either a convincing victory or a game full of torment with a not very good outcome. This time it turned out to be something in between – the point is definitely not what we hoped for.

After a week we are heading to Jelgava, where on August 4 (14:00) we will meet FS Jelgava, which just got rid of its head coach Valerijs Redjko.
