Valmiera FC has met all the criteria set by the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) for amateur club licensing and has been granted the LFF-Amateur license to participate in the 2025 Latvian 2nd League Championship.

A total of 16 teams will compete in the 2nd League Championship, divided into two groups. Alongside Valmiera FC, the participating teams include SK “Super Nova-2”, FS “Jelgava-2”, FK “Salaspils”, JFC “Viola”, FK “Ķekava”/”Auda”, FK “Aliance”, Dienvidkurzemes SS, FK “Staiceles Bebri”, JDFS “Alberts-2”, FK “Dinamo Rīga”, FK “Karosta”, FK “Līvāni”, Saldus NSS/”Leevon-2″, Rīgas Futbola skola un FK “Union”.

In the first stage of the competition, teams in both groups will play a double round-robin tournament. In the next phase, the top four teams from each group will advance to the second-stage Group A, carrying forward only the results from their head-to-head matches and playing another double round-robin tournament against teams from the other group. Meanwhile, teams that finish 5th to 8th in their first-stage groups will form Group B in the second stage, where they will battle to retain their place in the league.

The top two teams from second-stage Group A will earn the right to compete in Nākotnes līgas Championship in 2026. Meanwhile, the bottom two teams from second-stage Group B will lose their place in the league, making way for the top six teams from the 3rd League.

Valmiera FC finished the 2024 season in 4th place in the Tonybet Virslīga but was subsequently denied licenses to compete in both the 2025 Tonybet Virslīga and the 2025 Optibet Nākotnes līga.

Under the guidance of head coach Gatis Kalniņš, the team preparing for the 2nd League Championship consists of senior academy players, a few experienced local footballers, and several foreign players. The 2nd League season will kick off on April 5th/6th.
