Before the penultimate round of the Altero.lv LIIGA, it was officially confirmed that Valmiera FC had already secured the league title, following the technical loss awarded to SK Super Nova-2 in their match against FS Jelgava-2.
However, the celebrations for Valmiera and their fans were slightly dampened after suffering a 0–1 defeat to the same Super Nova side at Jānis Daliņš Stadium, in a game that no longer carried any significance in terms of points or standings.
The rare loss this season came in a match where the visitors clearly proved to be equals — their teamwork and physicality matching Valmiera’s strengths throughout. Our former goalkeeper, Dāvis Viljams Veisbuks, now guarding the Super Nova goal, wasn’t seriously tested by Valmiera’s attack and managed to keep a clean sheet without much trouble.
The visitors displayed good chemistry and fighting spirit, and it was clear the game would be decided by a single moment — and that moment came in the 78th minute. After Valmiera’s failed attack, Super Nova broke quickly on the counter, and Georgijs Bombāns found space to shoot. His effort was partially saved by Haralds Kalniņš, but the ball slipped into the net — 0–1.
In the closing minutes, Valmiera lacked both the precision and luck needed to turn things around, and the visitors from Riga claimed the victory — a measure of revenge for their 0–3 defeat earlier in the season.
To close out the championship season, Valmiera FC will host FK Karosta on October 26 at 14:00 at Jānis Daliņš Stadium.
Come and celebrate the title together with your team!
